Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane is located in Charlemont House, on the north side of Parnell Square at the top of O’Connell Street in Dublin 1. Our opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday 10.00am– 6.00pm, Friday & Saturday 10.00am–5.00pm and Sunday 11.00am–5.00pm and the gallery is closed on Mondays. Admission is free

The gallery’s original collection of modern art was presented by Sir Hugh Lane in 1908 and has, over the last century been enhanced by notable bequests, gifts and acquisitions including Francis Bacon’s Studio and Archive and Sean Scully’s gift of paintings.

Charlemont House was designed by William Chambers in 1763 for  James Caulfeild The first Earl of Charlemont and was refurbished as a public art gallery in 1933.

On entering the gallery please go to the reception desk where an attendant will assist you with all relevant information regarding the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions as well as workshops, tours and events. Next to reception is the stained glass room, which contains the remarkable and ever popular Harry Clarke piece The Eve of St. Agnes as well as work from other 20^th century stained glass artists. Go through the glass doors to enter the Sculpture Hall and galleries 1-9.

At the far end of these galleries is Francis Bacon’s Studio and gallery. The studio and archive presented by John Edwards was relocated to The Hugh Lane in 1998 and opened to the public in 2001. Proceed from the studio through gallery  9 to the  new wing, a two story extension which opened in 2006.

One of the permanent exhibitions on the ground floor of the new wing is the Sean Scully room which contains paintings presented by the artist in 2006. You may access the 1st floor by stairs or lift.

After enjoying the gallery’s collections as well as the beautiful architecture of the building, descend the grand staircase from the 1st floor which will return you to the reception area. Why not rest your feet and relax in our café on the basement level which serves tea/coffee and a selection of gourmet food and snacks. Our bookshop stocks gallery publications and a selection of other books and gifts.

Admission to the Gallery is free.

The café and bookshop are open during gallery hours.
